For painted applications, plywood requires more surface preparation than MDF to achieve an equivalent finish quality. For veneer-finished applications, plywood is a perfectly appropriate substrate.

Melamine and Laminate: Factory-applied melamine or high-pressure laminate surfaces on MDF or plywood provide a durable, easy-to-clean finish in a wide range of colours and textures, including wood-grain effects. These finishes are practical and economical but lack the material richness of paint, veneer, or solid timber.

Cost Comparison in Karachi’s Market

In Karachi’s current kitchen joinery market, the cost hierarchy from most to least economical is broadly as follows: standard MDF is the most economical for straightforward painted applications; moisture-resistant MDF and plywood are moderately priced; and solid timber is the most expensive, with the specific species significantly affecting the cost. 

When evaluating kitchen joinery costs, it is important to compare like for like: a kitchen quotation using standard MDF carcasses and doors should be compared with one using moisture-resistant MDF or plywood, not simply by the total price. The initial saving on standard MDF can be quickly negated by early replacement costs if the material fails in kitchen conditions.
